The High Lonesome Ranch

DeBeque CO

The High Lonesome Ranch sits in a fertile valley on the Western Slope of the Colorado Rockies, a 30-minute drive from Grand Junction’s Walker Field Airport. From September 1 through February 28 wing shooters will hunt for wild and early release pheasant, chukar and Hungarian partridge, and Scaled and Gambel’s quail. Brett and Robbie Arnold train the 46 English pointers, pointing labs, and flushing labs that comprise The Kennel at The High Lonesome Ranch.

The weather is moderate by Colorado standards, with light precipitation and an extra long bird-hunting season. Begin your visit with a pre-hunt warm up on the Five Stand course. Or, shoot the Pheasant and Quail Walk Up that is like a simulated hunt. The new Flurry Course launches high incoming targets at a rate of between 20-60 per minutes, so you’re sure to be ready for action. All guides are NSCA Level 1 certified shooting instructors, and there is a fully stocked Pro Shop, complete with blaze orange hats, shooting shirts, chaps, shells and a gun rental program.

The coverts are a pleasant mix between wheat and rye fields, creek bottoms, and sage and oak-brush flats. In most instances, English pointers will locate and point the birds and a flushing lab will put them in the air. Brush pants or chaps are helpful for getting through the coverts but are not essential.

For hunters who like variety, why not try the popular Fall Cast and Blast for 5 species of game birds and 4 species of trout? There are over 30 spring creek ponds on the property, and big game hunting for deer, elk, turkey, bear, and mountain lions. Or perhaps a bird hunt followed by a round of golf?

The High Lonesome Ranch has been featured in many magazines, from Shooting Sportsman, the Bird Hunting Report, the Upland Almanac, The Ruffed Grouse Journal, Stratos Magazine, Jetset, and Sporting Classics, among others.
