Tropic Star Lodge

A veritable paradise cut out of the Darien Jungle on the Pacific coast of Panama, Tropic Star is a hundred miles from the nearest road. Your charter plane lands on a concrete airstrip in Piñas Bay (translated Pineapple Bay). A ten-minute boat ride takes you to the lodge, into what can only be called “National Geographic Country.” Translated, the word “Panama” means “abundance of fish”. It is no wonder Robb Report magazine has named TSL the Top Fishing Resort in the World several times. It’s only a 20-minute run to the World Famous Zane Grey Reef and the waters are normally quite calm. Black Marlin are caught year-round and average 300 to 400 lbs., however they do get much bigger. Sailfish are also available year-round. If it’s that Black Marlin of a lifetime you’re looking for, or you’re just looking for an amazing variety of fishing in one of the prettiest places on earth, Tropic Star is the place. We offer flats fishing from “The Host”….the mother of all mother boats…as you can see from the photos “The Host” is a spacious and comfortable ‘moving lodge’ that transports up to 8 anglers to waters that no lodge can reach. Every morning you will wake up to new flats just outside your window…no long rides to reach the fishing grounds, just step into your guide’s boat and you are in business.
For years “Three Amigos” has been exploring unpressured flats that are not ‘pounded to death’ day after day. We fish for Permit, Bones, Tarpon as well as other seasonal species, many of which rarely get cast to. Our explorations have revealed wondrous flats from Glover’s reef in Southern Belize, down through the Bay Islands, and Cayes of Honduras. Many of these hidden flats were discovered by the former Bob Stevenson and Jean Louis Trombetta, two of the Three Amigos. Bob was a veteran flats fisherman, respected across the industry as a master angler, instructor and friend. Bob knew these waters well as he had been fishing this part of the Caribbean for over a decade. His legacy of fishing unpressured waters remains as we continue to further explore new fishing grounds, through our own research, our current trips, as well as the research efforts of our expert guides. Recently we have taken the Host to Belize City, picked up our guests fished Hicks Key, Long Key, Turneffe as well as other secret spots and dropped off our party back in Belize City. The same can be done out our Placencia, Punta Gorda and other access points. This mobility allows us to fish year round…we have no seasons!

The six-mile stretch of the scenic Dan River that lies adjacent to Primland is rugged, remote and home to beautiful wild trout. Guided fly-fishing is offered on a catch and release basis only for the wild brown, brook, and rainbow trout that inhabit these clear waters. For fly casters seeking less challenging Blue Ridge Mountain fishing, the broader and more forgiving Kibler Valley section of the Dan River is located nearby.
Guest property privileges include fishing at three ponds stocked with trout, bass and channel catfish. This unsupervised activity is fun for families and rental fishing equipment and bait are available at our South Gate Reception. Fish cleaning is available for those wishing to prepare their catch for dinner at their Mountain Homes. Deep Water Cay
Bahamas
Since 1958, Deep Water Cay has hosted some of the most famous names in fly-fishing. Joe Brooks, A.J. McLane, Curt Gowdy, Ted Williams, Flip Pallot and Lefty Kreh are some of the legends who have enjoyed the island’s 250 square miles of bonefish and permit flats.
Deep Water Cay is great all year long, and it just varies due to the weather. January and February are quiet months, with lots of medium-sized fish on the flats. March, April and May are peak Bahamian bonefishing months, and they are terrific for both numbers and size of fish. The summer months, June and July hold bigger bonefish, so if you’re looking for a shot at a prize it’s a good time to come. From September on there are mixes of big schools and also big fish, and weather permitting you are likely to have the flats to yourself.
From January through May you’ll want to have a nine-weight rod, and in the summer you can scale down to a saltwater 6 or 7 weight. Monocore fly lines work best in the late Spring and Summer. Flurocarbon leaders ranging from 8-16 pound test tippets work best. If you had to bring three flies, bring a Mantis shrimp, a McVey Gotcha, and a Meko’s Special. The Meko’s Special was developed for these waters by a Deep Water Cay guide (obviously named Meko).
You can also catch other species of fish at Deep Water Cay, and permit are around all year long. Offshore fishing for mahi-mahi and tuna is solid in March, April and May. Deep Water Cay has one of the better Wahoo fisheries in the tropics and the best times are between October and February.
Accommodations have been not only upgraded and expanded to include seven quaint oceanfront cottages that sleep two in twin beds, two-bedroom cottages with private baths, and four-bedroom cottages with private baths. Hard phone lines are in the main lodge, and for those who must stay connected, cell service and satellite Internet is available on the island. Up to 34 guests can vacation on the island.
Other buildings include the Club House for meals, the Welcome Center and Fly Fishing and Scuba Diving Pro Shops, the Fitness Center, AJ’s Tiki Bar, and the Barracuda Bar. Flats skiffs are Hell’s Bay Marquesa’s and Professionals as well as Dolphin Skiffs, and offshore boats are 33-foot World Cats. A wide variety of non-fishing activites are on the island, from scuba diving, snorkeling, tennis, kayaking, sailing, and massage therapy to name a few.

When not chasing trophy fish, marvel at the vast panorama until it is time to return to the Hotel and anticipate the next day.
